Join The Heckscher Museum of Art and the Romare Bearden Foundation for a co-hosted artist talk featuring exhibiting artist Robert Graham Carter as part of the Foundation’s Cinque Artists Series. Carter, whose work is currently on view in the exhibition Robert Graham Carter: The Art of Reflection, is a visual artist best known for his mixed-media works including commanding drawings; sculptural, high-relief paintings; and whimsical works on wood. Carter’s figurative compositions routinely speak to systemic societal issues with a specificity derived from his lived experiences.Â
This program will be moderated by Romare Bearden Foundation Board Member, Eric Shiner. Eric Shiner is the President of Powerhouse Arts, a Brooklyn nonprofit supporting creative expression. He has held leadership roles at Pioneer Works, White Cube New York, and Sotheby’s and was director of The Andy Warhol Museum (2010-2016). As a leading scholar on Warhol and Asian contemporary art, he has curated notable exhibitions internationally, including The Warhol Museum’s Andy Warhol retrospective that traveled across Asia from 2012 to 2014. Shiner has also served on the board for Visual AIDS, Art at a Time Like This, and BOMB Magazine. He lives in New York with his partner, Dr. Ishaan Kumar, and their dachshund, Juno.
Named after the Cinque Gallery, the nonprofit established in 1969 by Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Ernest Crichlow, the Romare Bearden Foundation’s Cinque Artists Series continues the gallery’s legacy in supporting artists through various stages of their careers, and by offering opportunities to engage in conversation and networking.
