Families are invited to celebrate Día de los Muertos at this special event at the Museum in collaboration with the Town of Huntington Hispanic Advisory Task Force and Latina Moms Connect, Inc.! Enjoy learning about this special holiday and how it is celebrated around the world. Meet artists Sueey Gutierrez, Brianna L. Hernández, and Manuel Alejandro Macarrulla and create colorful works of art inspired by the celebration. Activities throughout the day will include mask-making, designing your own memorial, flower-making, face painting, and more. Watch the documentary Strong Yaqui Women by Miroslava Gonzalez. Enjoy churros and hot chocolate donated by the Town of Huntington Hispanic Advisory Task Force.

Bring your own photographs or other personal items to leave at our ofrenda, to honor and remember your loved ones. The ofrenda will remain on view in the Museum’s central gallery during regular open hours on Sunday, November 3 from 12 to 5 pm.

Sueey Gutierrez is a New York-based artist of Salvadoran-Mayan heritage. Her vibrant works explore the complexities of identity, culture, and memory through her dynamic artworks that blend elements of traditional and contemporary art. Learn more: sueeygutierrez.com  @sueeygutierrezartist

Manuel Alejandro Macarrulla is a painter, printmaker, and mask maker whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in New York and throughout the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. His work with figures in settings relating to his native Dominican Republic, or other real or imagined places, integrates cultural significance and magic realism. Brianna L. Hernández is a Chicana artist, curator, educator, and death doula guided by socially engaged practices. In the studio, she creates multi-media installations focused on end-of-life care, grief, and mourning rituals based on lived experience, cultural research, and collaborations with peers including death education workshops. Miroslava Gonzalez is an indigenous, Mexican-American mother and storyteller on a journey to reclaim her cultural truth. Throughout her life, Miros’ insatiable curiosity was nurtured by the wealth of oral culture and traditions passed down to her from her ancestors. As such, she has always been a storyteller. Her desire is to share stories reflecting her cultural richness, a point of view integral to the world and our humanity, although often grossly underrepresented.
